November 7, 2025 to January 8, 2026 Beneath I-280: Excavating a Neighborhood Lost to San José Freeways  -  DiNapoli Gallery, 2nd Floor, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, 150 E San Fernando St, San José, CA 95112

In the mid-1960s, as I-280 and CA-87 reshaped San José’s landscape, an entire neighborhood disappeared. Through newly digitized Caltrans photographs and archival materials, Beneath I-280 visualized the vibrant communities that once stood there—inviting reflection on the social and environmental costs of mid-century urban planning.

Developed by researchers and students from San José State University’s Institute for Metropolitan Studies in collaboration with the King Library’s California Room, the project mapped the stories of the people who lost their homes to freeway construction. It invited the community to reimagine a more equitable, people-centered San José.

Visitors could explore the digital exhibit at library.sjsu.edu/exhibits for more information.

This exhibition, which received initial funding from the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI), was based on the MTI-funded research project Beneath I-280: Excavating a Neighborhood Lost to San José Freeways.

This event is an annual and internationally recognized observance on October 11th. By empowering girls through education, skills training, and mentorship, we can dismantle barriers and create a world where every girl can flourish. Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley celebrated the entire week of October 10th-15th and observed the 11th with an event.

"When I was younger, I wanted to be a scientist - but I had stopped that dream because I just hadn't seen a lot of women scientists.

But today, I met a lot of amazing women with amazing careers. I met engineers, I met lawyers - I met scientists! I really needed this."

September 3, 2024 Who Works in Transit? Establishing a Baseline of Transit Workforce Diversity   -  Online

This Research Snaps webinar was co-sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve—yet research finds mismatched representation, with fewer women and people of color in leadership positions and an overconcentration of men and people of color in operational roles. This Research Snaps was based on the MTI report Understanding Workforce Diversity in the Transit Industry: Establishing a Baseline of Diversity Demographics. The report authors shared the latest data on racial, ethnic, and gender diversity in the U.S. transit workforce. They also dove into promising practices to help transit agencies attract and retain staff who reflect and embrace the vibrant diversity of their communities.
