Graduate programs: MS and certificates in Transportation Management

The College of Business at San José State University, with support from the Mineta Transportation Institute, offers both a Master of Science degree and three graduate certificate programs.

The curriculum is led by nationally recognized instructors who are academic or industry experts. The Masters program is fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The program is accelerated, which enables students to complete a Master of Science in Transportation Management degree in two and a half years. Classes are held in the evening, allowing students to work full time while earning their degrees. Students generally take one course at a time, one night per week for each 10-class session, for a total of four classes per year. The program is available statewide at designated Caltrans district offices and other participating transportation agencies. Classes are delivered by two-way video conferencing supplemented by video streaming and web courseware.

Master of Science in Transportation Management

The Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM) is a fully accredited 30-unit Masters program, taking a little more than two years to complete. The curriculum includes six required courses, three electives and the culminating Capstone Course, MTM 290, Strategic Management in Transportation.

Certificate in Transportation Management

The Certificate in Transportation Management is a 12-unit program that offers two options. Students may take any four courses listed among the six required courses in the MSTM program, or they may take three required courses and one elective. The CTM program is ideal for students who may not be ready to pursue the full Masters program, but who wish to advance their transportation careers. Students who later decide to pursue the Masters degree may transfer up to nine units of their CTM program toward fulfillment of the MSTM requirements.

Certificate in Transportation Security

The Graduate Certificate in Transportation Security (CTS) includes two required courses – Emergency Management for Transportation Professionals and Security Issues for Transportation Professionals – along with two core courses from the MSTM curriculum. Students may apply six credits earned from the Certificate program toward the MSTM, should they later wish to continue. The Emergency Management course is taught by MTI Research Associate Dr. Frances L. Edwards, a renowned disaster response expert. Dan Goodrich, a specialist in planning, training, and exercises for weapons of mass destruction, teaches the security class. This Graduate Certificate program includes an option for SEMS certification.

Certificate in High-Speed Rail Management

The Graduate Certificate in High-Speed Rail Management (CHSRM) is designed for students interested in participating in the evolving High-Speed Rail Program in the United States. It will introduce students to the High-Speed Passenger Rail mode and describe its attributes and technical components. The worldwide introduction of the mode will be described as well as the path being taken in the United States. Students will gain general enterprise management and the management competencies required and will be introduced to the issues of organizing for High-Speed Rail project development and implementation.
