News & Events

MTI organizes or participates in several transportation-related events each year. These include national summits, regional forums, industry conferences, or special events and broadcasts. You can find leading transportation experts at all of these events, making them an excellent resource not only for professional and research insights, but also for networking. You can review our past events.

The Mineta Transportation Institute is deeply involved with many surface transportation issues. Our experts are available to speak with the news media about many topics, including autonomous vehicles, bicycle and pedestrian safety, congestion, high-speed rail, intermodal connectivity, public transit, transportation planning and policy, transportation security, and workforce issues.

September 3, 2024 Who Works in Transit? Establishing a Baseline of Transit Workforce Diversity   -  Online

12:00-12:30p.m. (PT) | Link to register.

This Research Snaps webinar is co-sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve—yet research finds mismatched representation, with fewer women and people of color in leadership positions and an overconcentration of men and people of color in operational roles. This Research Snaps is based on the MTI report Understanding Workforce Diversity in the Transit Industry: Establishing a Baseline of Diversity Demographics. The report authors will share the latest data on racial, ethnic, and gender diversity in the U.S. transit workforce. They will also dive into promising practices to help transit agencies attract and retain staff who reflect and embrace the vibrant diversity of their communities. Don’t miss our event Who Works in Transit? Establishing a Baseline of Transit Workforce Diversity.

Convened by TRB, the 7th International Conference on Women and Gender in Transportation (WGiT) will be held September 9-11, 2024 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, CA. The conference theme is Progress and Possibilities: Bridging Perspectives. It highlights how far recognition of gendered issues in transport have come, while also noting the important work ahead to bridge inequities. This will work require spanning disciplines, departments, scales, and organizations.

The Call for Abstracts - Presentations, Panel Sessions, and Non-traditional Submissions closes February 21, 2024.

Join us in sharing research and practical applications that highlight how gender considerations can be incorporated into the traditionally male dominated transport sector, a sector that is a contributor to economic growth, broadens access to health, education services, and employment, and more. The conference theme—Progress and Possibilities: Bridging Perspectives—highlights how far recognition of gendered issues in transport have come, while also noting the important work ahead to bridge inequities, work that will require spanning disciplines, departments, scales, and organizations. We are seeking individual presentations as well as pre-organized panels of three or four presentations on a particular theme, workshops, and roundtables. Abstracts may present original research, practical experiences, case studies, and/or solutions to policy concerns. We will accept presentations of work that has been published recently or is currently under consideration for publication. We are looking for presentations related to any mode or modes and infrastructure: aviation, roadways, active transportation, airports, transit, freight, rail, water, and space. We welcome submissions from countries of all levels of income.

The committee hopes to organize a Women and Gender in Transport Special Collection for publication in Transportation Research Record: The Journal of the Transportation Research Board following the conference. Stay tuned for more details.

October 22, 2024 to October 24, 2024 2024 “Research to Practice” Transit Symposium  -  Online

The 2024 “Research to Practice” Transit Symposium will take place October 22-24, 2024. The symposium will take place online and streamed on YouTube. As the transit industry is poised to take advantage of the largest transit and rail investment in our lifetimes, the symposium provides a platform where transit experts share insights on how evidence-based research is being or can be, used to make the most of these opportunities in a changing environment. This year’s symposium will focus on the following topics:

  • Transit leaders’ perspectives on the future of transit
  • Practical applications of transit data
  • Transit fare policy
  • Transit equity
  • Women in transit
  • Transit infrastructure costs
  • Transit research implementation

In addition to the opening and closing plenaries, the symposium features two types of sessions:

  • Researcher + practitioner sessions: researchers and practitioners will jointly present a research project that addresses a practical issue important to a transit agency, metropolitan planning organization, or department of transportation. Please describe the project background, the partnership, and how the research findings are or will be used to improve transit practice.
  • Regular sessions: traditional presentations where an individual presenter shares transit-related research.

AICP credits are available for this event.
