FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Jose, California— The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) of San Jose State University (SJSU) and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) in collaboration with Fehr & Peers and SPUR present “Understanding How Women Travel” Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Martin Luther King Jr. Library Room 225.

The panel discussion features L.A. Metro’s Chief Policy Officer, Elba Higueros and Chelsea Richer, Associate at Fehr & Peers discussing the findings of the L.A. Metro report. The findings reveal that the burdens and stressors women experience using public transit amounts to only 60% of women feeling safe on transit during the day and identifies changes agencies can implement to alleviate those issues. MTI Research Associate, Dr. Asha W. Agrawal, presents her related findings from Crime and Harassment on Public Transportation: A Survey of SJSU Students Set in International Context. Dr. Gordon Douglas, SJSU’s Institute of Metropolitan Studies Director, will moderate the discussion.

MTI and L.A. Metro are proud to bring “Understanding How Women Travel” to San Jose for an expert discussion on the background, research approaches and methods, conclusions, as well applicability to other agencies. This comprehensive and innovative study and its findings have laid the foundation for bridging the gender equity gap for current and future female public transit riders.

The panel is from 6-7 p.m. and is followed by a networking reception from 7-7:30 p.m. Guests can register at https://tinyurl.com/s3xgmct (seating is limited).
