Sustainable Transportation Lesson Plans

As one of the fundamental pillars of the transport industry, workforce development is a critical component in creating and sustaining a connected world. In partnership with elementary teachers and students, MTI developed a STEM transportation unit that introduces 1-6th graders to the basics of how people and goods are moved. These lesson plans are free to use, and MTI welcomes the opportunity to hear feedback or discuss potential partnerships from other educators. In these lessons, students learn about active modes of transportation, sustainability issues, transportation planning, and more.

Lesson Plan	Description

Lesson Plan 1 - Inclusive, Active Modes of transportation	View lesson plan materials.
	Walk, wheels, or automobiles, which mode is better and when? In this lesson, students learn about different modes of transportation and the benefits of active modes of transportation. Biking and walking are the most common modes of active transportation but also include riding a scooter or skateboard, etc. Students use their senses (e.g. sight and hearing) to make observations about different modes of transportation and then use critical thinking to evaluate which modes are better for different situations.


Lesson Plan 2 - Future Technology Today: Emerging Transportation Technology	View lesson plan materials.
	How would you get people from one busy space to another without adding to traffic? In this lesson, students learn about emerging transportation technology. First, they dive into the activity by watching and discussing an engaging animation about transportation history, from covered wagons to high speed transport tunnels. Then, they learn more about developing transportation technology such as electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, drones and more! In a culminating hands-on activity, they use problem-solving skills and creativity to design a transportation innovation of their own.


Lesson Plan 3 - Renewable & Nonrenewable Energy	View lesson plan materials.
	What type of fuel powers people? Planes? Your bike? In this lesson, students learn about different energy sources and types of fuel. They learn why energy is important for everyone and are introduced to renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. With colorful graphics to guide them, students learn about different uses for energy with a focus on transportation to brainstorm ways to save energy and encourage green energy use. What are some ways that your classroom or school can save energy?
