October 24, 2024	Southern Colorado Transportation Conference 2024 - Colorado State University Pueblo’s Occhiato Student Center (OSC), 2200 Bonforte Blvd, Pueblo, CO 81001 The global temperature is rising, and natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and landslides are becoming increasingly common and more severe. Research indicates the results of multi-hazard exposure and risk to rail infrastructure could be catastrophic. Delays from temperature alone could cost $45 to $60 billion by 2100. Approximately 27% of all global road and railway assets are exposed to at least one hazard annually and 7.5% are exposed to 1/100 year flood event. What is being done to protect our nation’s critical infrastructure and our communities? Transportation professionals and researchers for the Southern Colorado Transportation Conference (SCTC) 2024 explored this urgent issue with the theme: Climate Resiliency for Railroad Infrastructure. The event's featured speakers included Shane Ferguson, Director, Region 2, Colorado Department of Transportation, and Dr. Maryam Allahyar, Director, Research & Development, Federal Railroad Administration. Welcoming remarks were provided by Armando Valdez, President, CSU Pueblo, with closing remarks from Dr. Gail Mackin, Provost and Executive Vice President, CSU Pueblo. October 9, 2024 to October 10, 2024	2024 Empower Girls, Amplify Young Voices: International Day of the Girl - Bill, San José, CA This event is an annual and internationally recognized observance on October 11th. Like its adult version, International Women's Day (March 8), International Day of the Girl acknowledges the importance, power, and potential of adolescent girls. At the same time, this day is designated to eliminate gender-based challenges that little girls face around the world. By empowering girls through education, skills training, and mentorship, we can dismantle barriers and create a world where every girl can flourish. Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley celebrated the entire week of October 10th-15th and observed the 11th with an event. "When I was younger, I wanted to be a scientist - *but I had stopped that dream* because I just hadn't seen a lot of women scientists. But today, I met a lot of amazing women with amazing careers. September 25, 2024	Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition: Information Night MTI was joined by eager middle school students, dedicated parents, and passionate educators at the Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition Information Night. This event served as a gateway to an extraordinary national STEAM competition crafted to educate and engage students by solving our nation’s critical transportation issues. Participants learned how they can participate in the competition, and win prizes as we revealed this year’s Get Going, Go Green competition prompt. September 8, 2024	Viva CalleSJ - Parks to Roses - San José, CA Viva CalleSJ (pronounced Vee-Va Ka-Ye SJ) is a free recreational program that closes miles of scenic San José streets. Viva CalleSJ’s route takes participants through some of San José’s most eclectic and historic neighborhoods. The open street events bring people and communities together to walk, bike, skate, play and explore the explore the city like never before! September 3, 2024	Who Works in Transit? Establishing a Baseline of Transit Workforce Diversity - Online This Research Snaps webinar was co-sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve—yet research finds mismatched representation, with fewer women and people of color in leadership positions and an overconcentration of men and people of color in operational roles. This Research Snaps was based on the MTI report Understanding Workforce Diversity in the Transit Industry: Establishing a Baseline of Diversity Demographics. The report authors shared the latest data on racial, ethnic, and gender diversity in the U.S. transit workforce. They also dove into promising practices to help transit agencies attract and retain staff who reflect and embrace the vibrant diversity of their communities. August 29, 2024	14th Annual Silicon Valley Bike Summit - South San Francisco Library, 901 Civic Campus Way South San Francisco, CA 94080 SVBC's 14th Annual Silicon Valley Bike Summit is the region's leading gathering for active transportation leaders and advocates. New this year was the Youth Leaders in Active Transportation Award, recognizing the contributions of young advocates. This event provided an opportunity for like-minded individuals to connect, gain insights, and help shape the future of cycling in Silicon Valley and beyond. *MTI was a proud co-sponsor of this event.
August 8, 2024	COMTO Northern California's Summer Intern Reception - HNTB Oakland Office, 2101 Webster St., Suite 1400, Oakland, CA 94612 COMTO Northern California hosted a Summer Intern Reception event designed to introduce students to potential opportunities in the transportation industry. This event aimed to connect interns with industry professionals, offering a platform for networking, mentorship, and career exploration. Students can express interest in gaining insights into various career paths, understanding the latest industry trends, and hearing personal success stories from seasoned professionals. COMTO can benefit students by providing access to a wide network of professionals, offering mentorship programs, and facilitating internships and job placements. Through this event, COMTO helped students build valuable connections, gain industry knowledge, and develop the skills necessary for a successful career in transportation. July 30, 2024	Uncharted Territory: 2024 Cybersecurity Insurance and Transit Landscape Cybersecurity threats are everywhere, and no organization is immune. While the volume of cyberattacks has increased exponentially, the bigger concern for most transit agencies is that the average cost to recover from successful attacks has skyrocketed. While many transit operators have taken steps to improve cyber resiliency, others continue to assume they will not be targeted. How are insurance companies and regulators responding? This Research Snaps webinar featured discussion about recent evolutions in the cyber risk landscape and the impacts on transit. July 8, 2024 to July 26, 2024	Mineta Summer Transportation Institute (MSTI) 2024 - San José State University MTI's 2024 MSTI was held weekdays, July 8-26, 2024, M-F 9am-3pm at San José State University. While engaging in stimulating hands-on STEM activities and venturing on exciting local field trips, students learned about transportation innovation and earned 3 transferable college credits in Environmental Studies from San José State University. This program was completely free and open to high school students. This program is a crucial step toward building the transportation workforce pipeline. View the Program Page
