Survey of Building Information Modeling for Infrastructure (BIM4I)

Technology is developing rapidly in departments of transportation (DOTs). For instance, California’s Assembly Bill 1037 of 2022 establishes a six-year schedule for setting policies and procedures to increase the use of digital construction management technologies in the predevelopment, design, and construction stages of highway projects. To support Caltrans in meeting its goals, this research aims to provide a set of recommendations for implementing BIM4I based on lessons learned and best practices from agencies already in the process of BIM4I implementation.
To this end, a survey and follow-up interviews will be conducted with international, national, and local agencies, with a focus on gathering insights about implementation levels, implementation approaches, data standards and workflows, 3D models, communications with external stakeholders, use of technology partners and consultants, training and implementation processes, and lessons learned. This project supports the USDOT and Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) strategic priorities and strategic goals of Transformation and Organizational Excellence by providing insights to better implement BIM in the development of all the stages of infrastructure projects.

Implementation of Research Outcomes:

Anticipated research outputs include a set of recommendations for implementing Building Information Modeling for Infrastructure (BIM4I), with a focus on data standards and workflows, 3D model use, communication with external stakeholders, use of technology partners and BIM advice consultants, and training and implementation processes.

Impacts/Benefits of Implementation:

This research will support the implementation of Caltrans' BIM for infrastructure (BIM4I), as well as any other agency in the same process. BIM4I implementation in state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) will make infrastructure project delivery more effective and support the development of connected intelligent infrastructure that provides people-centered mobility.
