BART TO SILICON VALLEY—WHAT’S NEXT?
April 2006 |
|
ABSTRACT
|
| Extending the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system to the Silicon Valley from Alameda County
is the greatest public works challenge facing Santa Clara County. Funding for the project
diminished with the economic downturn, forcing the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority
(VTA) to cut existing services and search for new financing. Although funds had already been spent
on the project, controversy arose anew when federal transportation officials changed the funding
guidelines, and the VTA board began contemplating the need for new taxes.
BART to Silicon Valley—What’s Next? continues the dialogue as part of the Mineta Transportation
Institute’s Hot Spot forum series, and was cosponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission (MTC), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)/District 4, the
Commonwealth Club of California, and the Leagues of Women Voters of Santa Clara County. |
