The Smart Growth Livability Calculator

This project builds on the Transportation Research Board’s Handbook for Building Livable Transit Corridors (The Handbook), and TRB’s Transit Corridor Livability Calculator (The Calculator).

The goals of this project are to 1) further calibrate the calculator so that it can make even more accurate calculations of VMT and GHGs, necessary to address the move from level of service LOS as dictated by SB 743 and our Climate Action goals; 2) Give the calculator a stronger mapping interface and improve the dashboard to encourage widespread use by practitioners; and 3) building on the Calculator and Handbook’s ability to help with corridor plans. All told, this project will provide frameworks to the calculator and handbook to help with assessments and policy decisions related to a) complete streets (siting and choosing safety measures), b) climate action planning (best location efficiency for housing, encouraging alternatives, and providing GHG and VMT calculations), and finally c) for use in autonomous vehicle planning and design.
