Safety Considerations for All Road Users on Advisory Bike Lanes

An advisory bike lane (ABL) facility is a unique roadway design with a single center lane for bidirectional motorized traffic and two edge lanes serving non‐motorized traffic, which may also be used by motorists passing oncoming vehicles. The purpose of this research is to estimate the safety benefits to both motorized and non‐motorized road users, relative to standard centerline treatments. Our analysis of safety impacts will be based on i) real world data collected at existing sites and ii) a simulation‐based approach.
