Impact of Right-of-way Adaptation to Automated Vehicles on Driver Behavior; A Narrow AV-exclusive Lane on an Existing Smart Freeway

The goal of this research is to evaluate the mobility and safety impact of an emerging Automated Vehicle (AV) related roadway design solution -a narrow AV exclusive lane- on human-driven vehicle performance and driver behavior on regular lanes. Through a human subjects-based evaluation and custom-designed driving simulator scenarios, mimicking real San Diego I-15 smart corridor lane reconfiguration, this proposed work will investigate the driving behavior of human-driven vehicles driving on a regular lane adjacent to a narrow AV-exclusive lane.
