Framework for Evaluation of Retrofit Needs for Overpass Bridges to Achieve Desired Level of Post-Earthquake Functionality

Overpass bridges in California are an integral part of transportation network whose interrupted functionality after a major earthquake may result in major social disruption and generate huge economic losses. The goal of this project is to develop a framework for evaluation of retrofit needs for overpass bridges to achieve desired level of post‐earthquake functionality. The developed framework will facilitate the decision‐making process through identifying retrofit needs that will generate long‐term benefits to transportation investments through reduced business interruption and repair losses. A case study will be provided to demonstrate capabilities of the developed framework and will serve as an example to engineering practitioners on how to evaluate post‐earthquake bridge functionality and associated retrofit needs.
