The following U.S. government agencies are concerned with transportation policy and research. Descriptions are included for those which include surface transportation information. To see an agency description, click on the agency name in the left hand column.

Alternative Fuels Data Center (U.S. Dept. of Energy) - The Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) collects operating information from vehicles running on alternative fuels, analyzes the data, and makes it available to the public. The AFDC site contains information about alternative transportation vehicles, refueling sites, alternative fuels, biofuels, and clean cities. Also included at the site are alternative fuels web site statistics and information about the National Alternative Fuels Hotline.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) - The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is an operating administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). BTS is a statistical agency, a mapping agency, and an organization for transportation analysis. This site includes the State and Metropolitan Analysis for Regional Transportation (SMART) database, U.S. transportation statistics, descriptions of BTS products, geographical information systems, and international transportation data.

Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems - The Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems is concerned with developing ways to assist industry in the development of alternative fuel vehicles. This site includes documents and publications dealing with alternative fuels, electric vehicles, and other aspects of transportation.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) - The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) site includes detailed information about the organization (including an organizational chart and field map), descriptions of major program areas (Federal Aid, Federal Lands, and Motor Carriers), links to highway information Web sites, a publications index, announcements, conference listings, and legislative information.

Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) - The Federal Railroad Administration works as a partner with everyone associated with the U.S. railroad industry--large and small railroads, passengers, shippers, employees and their unions, managers, manufacturers, suppliers, Congress, state and local governments, and the general public. This site includes background data about the FRA, and information and documents from the agencies offices of public affairs, safety, and policy.

Federal Transit Administration (FTA) - This site contains information about the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), including general data, funding, research and technology, planning and policy, safety and security, and program guidance. Links to sites related to FTA activities are included.

House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure - The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure site contains information on legislative activities of the subcommittees, including aviation, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, railroads, and surface transportation. The committee calendar is also at the site.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Program - The Hybrid Electric Vehicle Program works with Industry to develop vehicles with high fuel economy and low emissions, with a goal of making hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) commonplace on American highways by the year 2003. This site contains information about programs, including those with General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.

Maritime Administration

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - The NHTSA site contains files relating to recent events regarding highway traffic and safety campaigns. Information is included in areas such as safety assurance, highway safety programs, consumer information, and traffic statistics and reports. The site also contains notices of public meetings and events.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

National Transportation Control/ITS Communications Protocol (NTCIP) - The primary objective of NTCIP is to provide a communications standard that ensures interoperability and interconnectivity of traffic control and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices. This site contains meeting minutes for the NTCIP Steering Group, the full text of a number of NTCIP publications, and a number of downloadable files (e.g., Standard Communications Protocol for Traffic Signals in California).

Oak Ridge National Laboratory -- Transportation Technologies - The Oak Ridge National Laboratory performs research in support of the Office of Transportation Technology. This site contains information about the areas of research: biofuels, feedstock development, Partnerships for a New Generation of Vehicles, Ceramic Technology Project, High Temperature Materials Lab, Lightweight Materials Program, alternative fuels, advanced propulsion technologies, and transportation data and policy analyses.

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewal

Office of Transportation Technologies - The Office of Transportation Technologies operates the Office of Alternative Fuels, Office of Propulsion Systems, Office of Transportation Materials and provides funding and direction for the Alternative Fuels Data Center. This site contains links and information organized by subject.

Research and Special Projects Administration (RISPA) - This U.S. DOT site contains information about and links to University Transportation Centers (UTCs) authorized under the Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation Assistance Act of 1987. Included at this site are news items about the programs, links to the sites, completed research reports, and current projects.

Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation - The Senate Committee site contains information about the committee's jurisdiction, as well as contacts for members.

St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation

Traffic Management Laboratory - The Traffic Management Laboratory of the Federal Highway Administration performs research and development (R&D), testing, and evaluation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) concepts, technologies, and R&D products to guide their integration and deployment in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This site includes information about activities, and a number of links to other sites.

Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) - The TCRP was established under the Federal Transit Administration to serve as one of the principal means by which the transit industry can develop innovative near-term solutions to meet demands placed on it. This site contains information about research activities and publications.

Transit-on-Demand Project - The Transit-on-Demand Project was initiated to demonstrate the potential use for a demand-based transit system to reduce the number of vehicle miles traveled. This site includes project information, vehicle tracking, links, pictures, and papers.

U.S. Coast Guard

U.S. Department of Transportation - This is the main page for the Department of Transportation. The site includes links to DOT administrations, press releases, and news and information.

U.S. Department of Transportation -- Technology Sharing Program - The Technology Sharing Program produces reports for the non-scientists or technical person to understand and act on problems of state or local governments. This site contains listings and an order form for reports, all of which are free. Report categories include: transit, commuter/travel demand/highway and street management, rural, disadvantaged, energy, safety, water, and taxi.

Volpe National Transportation Systems Center - The Volpe Center is "dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency, and responsiveness of other Federal organizations with critical transportation-related functions and missions." The site contains news, events, outreach, and links.
