This project was designed and supervised by Mr. George Manthey, the Principal of the school. Students participating in the project communicated with Mr. Manthey by E-Mail. He sent them assignments, distributed the essays, provided individual feedback and encouraged the students to write. One of the exercises involved a progression of writing: first writing a few sentences about the theme with "what do you think happened"-type of motivation. About ten students participated in the beginning of the summer. Not all of them end up participating in all the assignments through the summer.

The Bullis-Purissima School (K-6) is located in the town of Los Altos Hills. It is part of the Los Altos School Distict in Santa Clara County, California.

The following are short essays about Transportation that some of the students wrote in the Summer Writing Project.

The way I got to New Jersey was by plane. The vehicle needed gas for the plane to fly. The wings of the plane soar and the shape helped it fly well. In a plane it is nice and smooth for riding. You are fed a sack and a meal for the meal you are in the plane at the time. The trouble is that the landing is sometimes bumpy.

 Method of Transportation

I zoomed to Park City, Utah, in a 727 Boeing jet or our ski trip. The trip took about 2 hours. It wasn't the smoothest ride I've been on, but it was a lot faster. It took engine power, fuel, aerodynamics, and skilled pilots to fly those 200 passengers approximately 260 miles.

It was the first time I can remember that we had very little turbulence, but when we had it, we definitely had it. We had a choice of orange juice or Coke. I downed two glasses of orange juice and a bag of peanuts.

Soon I want to ride a 777 jet. I've never seen one on the runway, but I have seen a few on TV.

We were allowed 5 pieces of luggage (2 carry-on) and I brought on my backpack (which was stuffed with books) and my dad brought the family's skis. The other 2 pieces of luggage were stored in the belly compartment. We flew business class. Only once have I been in first class but that time I was asleep before the plane took off.

I remember looking at the lake as we flew by. Around the edges were heaps and heaps of salt. I also saw a few people (who looked like ants from that high up) gathering salt for souvenir.

The way back was pretty dark so I read for half a hour and then I slept. The day after I came home I rested the day because of my jet lag.

My Trip to Hawaii, Maui, and Honolulu

I'll tell you my trip to Hawaii, Honolulu, and Maui. Let's start. When I rode in the car I was thinking of being on a boat, so I acted like a sailor in my imagination. We took a plane to Honolulu and on the plane I was bored, but I felt going to China from Hawaii by canoe. Our second stop was Hawaii, on that plane it felt like gliding in the sky, but they said we were there like in two minutes. Our third stop was Maui, on that plane it felt like only playing for two seconds because it felt like two seconds on that plane they said were there in about two seconds. The plane home was like the plane to Maui. When I got in my own car, I felt like sleeping in one of the Hawaii hotels' bed. It was a fun trip because letting your imagination drift away is always a good way when you are bored. Aloha, good-bye.
