Fourth Summer Transportation Institute
The 2006 Summer Transportation Institute (STI) hosted 10th-12th grade high school students from eight schools and five cities in the Silicon Valley region of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Comprising the four-week-long program are a three-unit college course with an interactive class focused on transportation issues such as public policy, history, and sustainable transportation and the environment; hands-on science projects; and field experience at regional transportation facilities.
The program is sponsored by the Mineta Transportation Institute and San José State University through a grant from the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration.
Student reactions ranked the program as a "once in a lifetime experience." To quote Evan, from Fremont High in Sunnyvale, "The class was more than I imagined and surpassed all my expectations! The class lectures from Dr. Bando were interesting; the projects and field trips were awesome!"
After a tour of the Bay Area Rapid Transit District headquarters, Stefanie, from Presentation HS in San Jose, noted, “BART is more than just transportation. Engineering, economics, and other fields are all intertwined.”
Also among the field trip destinations were Mineta International Airport, NASA Ames Research Center, New United Motors Manufacturing (NUMMI), Port of Oakland, and the San José Traffic Control Center. Summing up his experience, Jonathan, from Leland HS in San José, said, "There are a variety of different career opportunities that are available in the transportation industry. I’ve gained new insight into those career options.”
