MTI Welcomes the Summer Transportation Institute

By Michael G. Cardenas, El Portal Leadership Academy

San José State University, and the Mineta Transportation Institute officially welcomed the first class of the Summer Transportation Institute (STI) on July 1, 2002.

The inaugural year gave the opportunity for 18 students from Santa Clara County to explore transportation careers in public policy, engineering, project management, planning, and many other areas for four weeks this summer.

The program had two major components. First was a series of guest speakers' lectures and workshops, which included hands-on activities.  The second component included practical experience including field trips relevant to local and statewide transportation. This included a trip to the state capital city of Sacramento.  Two days were spent taking surveys in both the local light rail system, and the Caltrain.  Students gathered information, and later tallied and evaluated the surveys.

The pictures below are representative of their experiences from the four exciting weeks spent at STI.

On behalf of the 18 students I'd like to say that we feel the STI Program was an exceptional success.  Our many thanks to our teacher Penny Donovan, and assistant Joel Columbero.  This program provided us with an introduction to the challenging opportunities in the field of transportation.
