TRANSPORTATION LINKS
ListServs
Listservs are electronic mailing lists for specific topics of discussion. Anyone with an e-mail account can subscribe to listservs covering a variety of professional and recreational subjects. Once you subscribe to a list you can send one message to reach everyone subscribed to that list, and you will receive all messages posted to the list by others.

Listservs vary in number of subscribers and average messages sent to the list. Be aware that once you subscribe to a list, you will need to check your e-mail more frequently to avoid an overloaded mailbox. Some listservs are "moderated," meaning that an individual or group filters the messages for irrelevant material before sending it to the list. Unmoderated lists tend to yield a larger quantity of "junk mail," but can still be valuable to subscribers.

To subscribe to a listserv, send a message to the "Address to subscribe" listed below. Leave the subject line of the message blank. In the body of the message type "subscribe (listserv name) (Your First Name) (Your Last Name)." For example:

subscribe transit John Smith

Once you are subscribed to a listserv, a message containing instructions and (sometimes) a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) file will be sent to you. Be sure to read the instructions carefully to avoid mistakes in posting messages.
