Program Overview
The MTI transportation curriculum was designed with input from national transportation leaders. The core classes address subjects that are rarely found in other curricula, such as transportation funding and finance, transportation policy and regulation, and leadership and management of transportation organizations. Elective classes typically address more topical subjects, such as transportation security and labor relations in transportation. The MTI faculty consists of extraordinarily well-qualified individuals who typically have achieved notable success in both the practice and academic study of transportation-related subjects.
For example, Dr. Nick Compin earned his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and is an experienced planning executive for Caltrans. Therese MacMillan, who teaches transportation funding and finance, is deputy director for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission in San Francisco. She earned a dual Masters’ Degree in city planning and engineering science, also at UC Berkeley.Because the program is based upon live videoconferencing that spans the state, students can network with their counterparts at a variety of agencies across California. In course evaluations, students often remark that the interaction is a favorite program feature. Typical classes include employees of Caltrans, local transit and transportation agencies, and private transportation consulting firms, along with career changers.
